According to the link below, in liver cancer cells (and possibly other types of cancer cells - they mention colorectal and melanoma), excess cholesterol is made which is deposited in the membranes of mitochondria which decreases the membranes' flexibility and thus their permeability and prevents pro-apoptotic molecules (such as bax and bak) from being released...

This was stated in an article today in the Wall Street Journal by the CEO of a drug company. I can't imagine where all this money goes. Is this a bogus statement or has a drug company shown its cost accounting for drug development? If it is true, there has to be something very wrong with regulations...
