Things are getting weirder and weirder. My original post is at the bottom. I have received the replacement relay and capacitor today. Installed them (it was a 2 minute job). Plugged in the fridge. The compressor happily started working normally, mildly vibrating and indicating in all respects that it is running fine. Happy after 2 minutes,...

I have this trimmer/edger which here in the east is most likely going to be utilized for the Summer only. In the remaining 10 months, what happens by non usage with the rechargeable battery? The company says, run it down at least on a monthly basis, which I feel is ridiculous . Its one of those Li-Lon batteries..18volts Anyone here in a similar situation...

Yes, I know many, if not most of us are not fond of Home Despot for reasons not to go into here. But I ran across an interesting article about how the place got started -- a tribute to a smart, hardworking guy named Bernie Marcus, who founded the chain. Here's a review from the AARP Bulletin. ============================================================================ ...

Where should you put your worst tires? I say put them on the front. If you have a tire problem you can control a skid best if the problem is with the tire on the front. If the problem is on the rear the skid will be a lot harder to control. What do ya`ll think?

A young couple recently bought the house across the street from me. It's a 1940-ish colonial. They moved back from another state and were living with Mom while they did some work on the house. They removed some old (cheap) built-ins, they painted, they carpeted, etc. One thing they hired out was the replacement of the upstairs bathroom floor. This is...

Do these shrubs so close to a house wall pose any future problems for the house brickwork? http :// tinypic, com /r/2sbtyz5/7 Thanks for advice.

I worked on an Electrolux washing machine yesterday. Top load machine, fairly new. Customer complaint of squealing, at high speed. Turning the drum by hand (from inside the machine) produces no noise. Replace the belt. Still squealing. Any ideas what to look for? My thought is to take the front panel off, and run it without the front panel. See if...

I have a '29 house that I'm working on the kitchen drain. There are a whole series of ~ 2.4 " (OD) cast iron elbows that come out of the wall and flow into the main line. What I'd like to do is replumb that with PVC down to the existing cast iron drain. How do I do that without damaging the main line? What do I seal it back up with...

I am in the process of remodeling my master bathroom. It is small. Right now I have two sinks. I could sure use more counter top space and was wondering what to do. Would you eliminate one sink, or would it be best to keep two sinks for resale value, even though I plan to stay here? Thanks. Kate

Got a log house here, with a stone masonry fireplace and chimney. Chimney leaks because it's never been sealed to the roofing with anything other than tar (asphalt) Never been flashed. Watched some step-flashing videos on YouTube, but those were all brick chimneys with even surfaces. Some used lead flashing, others copper. The chimney comes out at the...

When did they start putting dampers in chimneys? At one time fireplace chimneys went straight to the top with nothing interfering, right? But my fireplace chimney has a damper, which I use to keep the indoor air from escaping when there is no fire. It can also be used to slow down a fire, perhaps? Hence the name? Aren't dampers universal in chimneys...

I have a pile of leftover driveway gravel (about a pickup bed full) that I'm planning on recycling for french drain filler, but it's very dirty and full of sediment. I spent most of the afternoon trying to spray it clean with a garden hose, but I wasted a massive amount of water, and I didn't get very far. I eventually began raking out about a third of...

We've had a long, hot dry summer, but finally got some rain last night, and I've got a minor algae bloom a few places on the walls and bottom. I've used PhosFree for a number of years, and have essentially put an end to algae problems. But I hadn't used it this year since the water tested low at the beginning of the summer. So I took a water sample...

I've got 3 of the same toilets installed in the house I built in 2005. One toilet has me totally freaked out. It doesn't flush properly and has gotten somewhat worse over time. I can hold the flush handle down and the flapper opens just fine. The tank is filled with water and it empties at rate similar to the other toilets. The bowl just fills up with...
