I am gutting and removing all exterior and interior walls on my 1/2 top floor completely and going with a full story. My question is this. When the exterior walls are built by the contractor, is it normal to just nail the exterior walls into the top (header maybe) of the main floor walls? I am wondering if this is typical and enough strength wise since...

I have a Amana fridge and when the fan starts it makes a noise for about 10 seconds. The fan continues to run with out any noise. I took the back panel off the fridge and it seems like the noise is coming from part with the copper lines running out of it. Do I have to have the fridge recharged with chemicals? Slow leak? Any advice would be appreciated....

The question is when framing a gable dormer where there will not be a supporting wall under the joists (at least not under the entire run), how wide can these be made? Asked a different way, is there a limit to the number of joists that can be removed? I understand the concept of replacing each removed joist with one on each side when cutting in a...

Moved into an older home a couple years ago with an existing sprinkler system. It has never worked correctly and I am trying to get the system back into shape. Just replaced the backflow valves and got the system to partially work but can not leave the water and the timer on. It appears that one of the valves is stuck open or partially open which allows...

Hi folks! No-nothing type here, trying not to get hoodwinked by the AC guys coming out tomorrow. Any help in understanding the issues at hand is much appreciated. The unit is a RUUD Acheiver 10 "SCRO11 Inside" is what one of the labels says. We bought the house ten years ago, and the inspector said the unit was about 2 years old at that time. The...

New York Times Opinion Op-Ed Columnist Doing the Troops Wrong By BOB HERBERT Published: May 6, 2008 At the top of the list of no-brainers in Washington should be Senator Jim Webb’s proposed expansion of education benefits for the men and women who have served in the armed forces since Sept. 11, 2001. It’s awfully hard to make the case...

Am having first experience with an outdoor MH flagpole light fixture problem. The bulb just gets a blue arcing or glow in the center of it, but won't fire to full brightness. Is this typical of just the lamp itself failing? Other than that the bulb looks normal (not darkened like a dead fluorescent) TIA MikeB

I rent one half of a small duplex that kind of sets in a "bowl" as far as good HD TV signal reception. I'm def going to have to use an outdoor antenna to get off air digital TV channels. Thing is I'm looking for a non-perm method of mounting a smallish TV antenna up high..... roof or something. No drilling or mounting wanted if possible I was thinking...

I have a Poulan Pro 2900 46cc 20" chain saw. All of a sudden, the bar oil is not oiling the bar and chain. I took the cover off the bar and chain adjustment compartment, took the bar and chain off, cleaned the whole compartment out, and looked all over for a clogged feed line or something, and couldn't find where the bar oil was supposed to come out to...

Yesterday a promo aired that promised us the most surprising TC yet. I can't imagine what it will be! Also, Ponderosa has a good clip (more people) and it shows a road sign that reads "Koror and Melekeok"....

Cub Cadet's ZT lawn tractors are considerably more expensive thanCub Cadet's lawn tractors of the same size but without ZT capability. Are they worth the higher price? Do they save considerably more time, and presumably more gas to make them worthwhile?

My mom's 22 year old 4 Ton 10-seer Carrier A/C condenser is shot. Her furnace is relatively new. She wants to replace the old unt with a new Puron Carrier 4 ton condenser. One HVAC company is saying that they do not install new evaporator coils because it is unnecessary, and the efficiency will be around 12 or 13 if the old coils are used with a...
