ok, i've got a house with both vinyl siding and brick (real bricks) exterior. a apparently reputable (in business over 10+ yrs) company has offered to wash the exterior with a hot water/low pressure power wash. doing some reading on the web, it's a mixed assortment of opinions regarding the long term implications of using pressurized water streams to...

Hi, all, Is it bad to paint over gloss latex paint with enamel? THe latex gloss used on teh trim and doors in the house doesn't resist staining or stand up to cleaning as much as I'd like, but I'm having a hard time getting info that I trust re: whether gloss enamel can go over gloss latex without causing problems. TIA! - K.

I was following the advice in the home depot outdoor projects book about moving the water from my gutter down-spout to someplace farther away. But I'm confused on one point. Should I be using the PVC pipe with holes in it (at 4 and 8 o'clock) such that the water disperses along 10' of it and the rest ends in a sistern, or should I be transporting...

In my study, my lamps will flicker every few minutes or so. I assume that I have some defect in the wiring on this circuit, or that there is a problem with my circuit breaker connection, or the breaker itself. So, today I went to the breaker box and made sure that the wire connecting to the breaker were screwed down as tight as possible. I was able...

can i get some input on what layers to use on a new (eco-ish) construction in cold canada? i am thinking of (from outside to inside) siding, firring, 1"rigid foam, 7/16"osb, 2x6 with white fibreglass insulation, reflective vapor barrier, firring, drywall. do i need typar outside? also how common is it for mice to eat through PEX pipe? common enough that...

A friend needs about 60 feet of a city sidewalk removed. I suggested he rent a jackhammer and I'd help. We're both fit and husky. I plan to handle the hammer. Any tricks or techniques I should know about before I start?

Hello, I will build a concrete block wall 4 blocks high for a garage. Three of the courses will be below grade. I want to make this wall as strong as practically possible. (I could not use a poured wall because of access problems). I live in a freeze/thaw area. I want to use some rebar in the cores for strength. Should these cores with rebar be filled...

Ok, well having accidentally ignited what apparently is a chronic and highly thermal debate on tank vs. tankless, let's say for the moment that I am sold on the tank option. For a gas supplied house (from town, not a propane tank), are there any particularly good brands suggested in the 60 to 80 gal range? Any brands to stay away from is also appreciated...

Does anyone know the proper name for the old perforated beaverboard type ceiling tile? I have only seen it in 12x12 pattern mostly in older buildings and homes. Thanks in advance. K

At the risk of getting an admonition from my friend the moderator, I just wanted to say just last evening I had a visit from the 2 principals. They did in fact agree with one of you knowledgeable fellows that it was in fact "spalling" and was worked while too wet. A promise was given that all avenues would be tried to alleviate the issue including decorative...

A friend is having new foot drains installed around his house. The contractor is using a dark stone (round rock) aggregate that's about 8 times larger than number 57 gravel which I think is limestone. Although limestone may weigh less than these small round rocks, I venture to guess that one cubic yard of 57 gravel weighs more than one cubic yard of those...
