Tom Lindsay gave me the homework assignment of answering a Dear Amy letter. Apparently the writer didn't like the neighbor's cigar smoke. Amy (armed with some scientist's stupidity) told the writer about the health issues of ETS (environmental tobacco smoke) and suggested the writer educate the cigar smoker about these dangers. That would, in theory, get...

Some earlier discussion: I've noticed that with non island smokes the darker the ash, the more flavorful the smoke. With the Maria Mancini line, some smokes are have lighter ashes and are somewhat bland. Certainly it's been written that the lighter ash contains more magnesium in the soil. However these lighter ash smokes taste milder to me. I've...

Ever notice how the tobacco nazis aren't as much against tobacco per se as they are against the smoker? Lines like "tobacco sucking pigs" or "tobacco puke addicts" etc. etc. suggest that they're more against he person than the product. My guess is that they're very frustrated in life, depressed, financially stricken, and pathetic. To get their jollies...

Study Finds Big Social Factor in Quitting Smoking By GINA KOLATA For years, smokers have been exhorted to take the initiative and quit: use a nicotine patch, chew nicotine gum, take a prescription medication that can help, call a help line, just say no. But a new study finds that stopping is seldom an individual decision. Smokers tend to quit in groups,...

For ASC birthday Chad "thebox" Burton. Elsewhere in history... May 23 1498 Religious fundamentalist Girolamo Savonarola is executed in Florence, Italy for his many heresies. The Catholic Church had already excommunicated the Dominican friar the year before, but Savonarola continued to preach for radical reforms. Among other things, he held "bonfires...

The Santa Cruz mountains are on fire! 2 [main] fires, actually, one far away and one spookily close. We're ok, thanks :) ...But I came home from work to keep an eye on things (and pack a trailer, "just in case"), and prepare to evac the hounds, assist neighbors, etc., in case the wind changes. Yikes! Cigar content: What better time to sit on...

for ASC birthday boy Paul "schnauzer" Schnettler. Elsewhere in history... May 22 337 Emperor Constantine dies. Although quite dead, his embalmed corpse continues to act as head of state, receving state dignitaries and daily reports from ministers as if nothing had changed. Constantine's macabre leadership continues through winter. May 22 1851 Hail...
