I'm talking about the setup of a separate nut to constrain the string spacing across the fretboard, and a separate first fret to set the height- you tend to see them on older guitars, and on Fylde acoustics. The big advantage that I can see is that I can experiment with heavier strings without wrecking the action set by the nut. The big disadvantage of a...

This makes me feel dumb... Is it "eh-pih-PHONE" or "eh-PIH-pho-nee"? Is it "EYE-bahn-ez" or "ih-BAHN-ez"? Is it "DEE-ah-DARE-ee-oh," "duh-DARE-ee-oh," or "ah-DARE-ee-oh?" Any others that will come up? I swear I heard them all today. --Cliff (US) (For your amusement, the Japanese watchmaker Citizen is "she-chi-zen" when they say it.) ...

One of the best ways to whip yourself into line is to have a deadline... Tomorrow night SECR (Shelly,Ed,Charlie,Cory,Rany) will have our first gig at a blues club in Wisconsion.. Current band, with all members has been together about 2 months - should be a blast... Ed S.

I got an email from Berkley about some online courses they are offering. I am considering taking ear training and music theory courses. Have any of you taken courses like these? Do you think it has made a significant impact on your guitar playing ability? Thanks Mike 7th_string

I have been practicing the blues scale, the one which starts off the 8th fret, since it has been easy to commit to memory. So for about 2 weeks now I'm almost at the point of being able to look at the strumming hand and hit most of the strings consistently, and run/walk through the scale. Only thing is I can't feel the strings too good because my fingertips...

Is it actually helpful to practice chord changes in a mechanical way, such as while watching TV or engaging in any other mind-numbing distraction? I don't mean this to be a replacement for a focused practice session; this is time I would not otherwise have had the guitar in my hands. Yes, this is something suggested by someone I know. No, I have no idea...

I'm posting this in the beginners group because this multieffects unit, the Toneworks AX3G, is cheap and cheerful, and because I am a relative beginner myself at what I'm trying to achieve. I've been mucking with it fairly steadily for about three weeks now, and have just made up a spreadsheet for my user presets With the band I play three different...

The Sting song, "Hung my head" alternates between measures of 4/8 and 5/8. http://youtube.com/watch?v=jR-MTqOIFzs People say to think of the rhytym as alternate bars of 4/8 + 5/8, i.e., eight 1/8 notes (just like you are playing in 4/4 time) followed by a single 1/8 note. The chord changes are Bb, Gm and Eb. I can sing the melody (even though...

Does the Toneport require you to use their software only, or can you also use the hardware as a generic USB audio interface for other apps?
