Geezer asks : > How can you break the rules and break out of the chains > if you don't know what they are? I think rules are what is in the way of expressing what you've got inside. For example, if you're "well behaved" you don't throw tantrums. Why ? because there's this rule that says that you don't, and if you do everyone is going to hate you....

I was cleaning out the closet behind my studio yesterday, and I saw a ratty old guitar case. I opened it up, and there was a hollow body electric guitar with sunburst finish. Its brand is Encore. I assume it's a cheapo? Anyway, I have absolutely no recollection of where it came from. It had to be from my college band days, so 20 years or so. Incredibly,...

Saw James McMurtry do a concert at the Birchmere in Washington DC tonight. As usual, he was great -- the man is a fine rock guitarist. But for his last song, he pulled out a very short-necked -- maybe 8 to 10 frets? -- electric twelve string guitar. Looked like a full-size body, but the overall instrument looked like a slightly larger mandolin. Has anyone...

Stephen Calder says to PT : > Take your own advice. Stop complaining about how complex it is and just > use it. I'd say instead "and just lose it". All you need is your guitar, your amp, and maybe a microphone. I dislike all this electronic crap everyone is drowning in. The other day I listened to a girl singing and her voice sounded like a thousand...

I don't know why gear is so complex today. A few years ago I bought a DSP unit for vocals. Of course it is digital, midi etc. Everything can be edited and saved. Luckily it has some usable presets. Then I bought a Mackie digital mixer....forget about it! I sold it and got a Behringer. I needed a recorder that I could record 8 simultaneous tracks on and bought...

I don't think music was that widespread, at least not in my corner of the woods. I was in 1st grade 45 years ago and I don't recall music classes. We did sing a hymn...

What's the difference in someone learning music and to play an instrument than it was 50 years ago? 50 years ago most schools taught music from 1st grade on. Everyone learned music basics and how to read music. It was part of life and basic education in those days. We learned scales, how many sharps or flats in a key, how to form triads and understood the...

I am looking for a portable rechargeable amp to use with campfire sings with up to 100 people. I saw a Pignose portable amp but it uses batteries. I don't want to worry about carrying extra batteries on the road. Also I would need to plug my guitar and a mic into it at the same time. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike

Twelve bar blues – the basics You’ve heard of it, and as a beginner maybe you’ve played it. It’s one sequence that’s so well known, it’s a starting point for many a jam between musicians, especially those who have not played together before. Everyone knows how the chord progression goes, and it just repeats over and over, so you can forget worrying...

I have been going to a few local blues jams, and I am trying to get the nerve to get up and play. What I have noticed is that a lot of the people seem to have years of experience. One of the places that I go and watch does the jam from a list and they pick 2 guitarists, a bassist, a drummer to play about 3 or 4 songs then they pick a different set of...

My 8-year old nephew is interested in learning guitar. My sister is willing to spend up to $200 on an instrument. I volunteered to help find something suitable. He says he likes "country music", so I figure a steel-string acoustic would give him some of the sounds he likes. I know there are tons of decent electrics available for not much money. But...

I bought a Crafter SEG480 a few weeks ago. I was really suprised when I tried it out in the shop..,it really sounds nice and is easy to play and it's really, really pretty. I haven't played guitar for 15 years and I was never much of a player, in fact the best way to ruin a song was let me play it. Even I couldn't hurt the tone of this guitar! So now...
