I'm forty-seven and I've been playing the bass since I was twelve. I've studied with some good players: Rene Worst, Tom Hazlitt, Rick Kilburn, David Friesen, and two lessons with Ray Brown. I've gotten to play with some good players and make some music I'm proud of. I have pretty much distilled my gear down to a few excellent items that don't get in the...

After 10+ years my cover band is close to folding. I told long stories here last year about a founding member leaving. Well, much of the fun left with him and I've lost most of my interest. Our Female Singer has, too, because she has her own band and I found out today Guitarist (founding member) is also losing interest. Today I heard that new Male Singer...

It feels good but in a way I feel a little sad. We had been together for 10 months, only played 1 gig 8 months ago. Though they talked about seriously, we never really did much at practice, just fooled around. We learned a few new songs but barely. We supposed to be the modern equivalent of their oldy classic rock band but ended up playing mostly...

My bass playing skills took a serious downturn last month, for a very strange reason. I had surgery on my left ankle. How does that effect my bass playing, you night ask? Well, apparently I developed the habit of tapping my left foot to the beat, keeping time. I can't tap, and I have to concentrate more on keeping time, and the playing gets very...

Alice: Lisa, just call the technician! Lisa: Don't be silly. All you gotta do is change the toner. It's real easy! http://www.hipcow.com/p/0074/toner/

First of all, this post isn't for those who are just love to build guitars for your personal enjoyment or those who build guitars for the artistic aspect (art guitars). Guitar making techniques passed down from generation to generation is a beautiful thing and if people stopped then we wouldn't have a lot of the companies we do today. An example in point,...

Paul McCartney-Helter Skelter. It's amazing how the rough draft can turn into to something so incredible. And could anyone ever have imagined as he sat there strumming out the chords for the guys it would become the title track to some of the most infamous murders in history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuNV5O1qEPI&feature=related SotR

Hey! I have a Kay copy of a Gibson SG, and I need to replace one of the tuner ferrules. I've checked AllParts, Stewart-MacDonald, and a number of other on-line parts dealers, but all I can find is string ferrules. Does anybody know where I can find tuner ferrules? TIA. Mike L.

Being fortunate enough to play an instrument that uses 1/4" mono cords, I usually don't have to worry about these things. But now that the missus is playing keys in the band, I'm delving reluctantly into things PA, I could use a little help. Both her keyboards have two 1/4" outputs, to provide stereo sound. (Duh.) At home, she runs 1/4" TRS-to-XLR...

My two guitarists had invested pretty heavily in PA before I joined the band. Two 18" subs, two 15" mains, three floor monitors (plus in- ears for one guitarist and the drummer), three power amps (one for each set), 12-channel mixer, compressor, signal processor, line conditioners. Going to a gig means filling up two minivans, an SUV and a pickup truck (I'm...
