I think that it is important to admire the role that the rhythm section, and the fundamental component of the bass in this context, to the sound of the overall band. We provide the platform on which other players/singers stand. We ramp up the energy, create holes for soloists, and generally keep time and the pitch thing going. In my 40 years performing...

In the last several weeks I have taken possession of my USA Lakland Joe Osborn Jazz Bass and purchased an incredible 64 Custom Shop Jazz. Mind you, I was born before rock n roll was even on the airwaves. Since those golden years I have gone through just about every boutique bass made. I've sold most. Add these two great Muscle Beach basses to my great...

My current band is on their second singer since I joined in November. Like their last, this one has never performed with a band before, but was very into karaoke, and thought to give the band thing a shot. A relatively decent singer. The last one hated hauling gear to and from gigs, and kept a music stand with lyrics in front of him for most songs, even...

I have an old guitar synth that I got off eBay, and it takes a relatively oddball adaptor: 7-10V, 1.5A (1500ma), with some odd socket size. I can't find anything close to it in my gear. I contemplate rifling through the bins at my local computer parts store for hours, but I don't have that kind of time lately. So I suck it up and head to the Shack. Instead...

Any recommendations for a set of not-too-expensive flatwounds for my new $279 Squire Fretless?

This was in a local Craigslist ad. I thought it was pretty spot-on. It kinda ties into an e-mail discussion I had recently with a guy who wanted a talented bass player in his 30s or older who had cover band experience to play in his '70s classic rock band. So far so good except that you had to be willing to practice two times per week. I tried to explain...

A phone call just came in caller ID from my local Guitar Center. I answer and there's a kid with a teenager's awkward voice on the other end who asks for Todd. I greet him and he says he wanted to let me know that they're offering 15 months free financing, so if there's any gear I've been wanting to get now would be a great time. I chuckle and say...

Saw a wierd stringed instrument on tv last night - 3 bass strings and a set of six strings in what looked like open chord guitar tuning on the same neck. Frets ran at unusual angles to cater for the fingering/string length.... Anyone know what this creature is??

My main band will do the next 3 gigs, then stop all activities. After 5 years, I can say that it's a good thing. Sax player no longer wants to play with us (he has better gigs and family is priority). The new keyboard player is not very good. The guitarist is still alcoholic. We never got the 12 gigs/year we always wanted. No one will miss us. I'm...

Okay, well maybe it's not The Plague, but I caught *something* out there in the woods! My trip to Nashville ended with a trip home a day early and laying in bed sick for a week and a half, getting up everyday and wondering if it was time to go to the hospital. I guess I should start from the beginning. I went out to Victor Wooten's third BNC...
