Last night, I had a close encounter with what American Idol is doing to music, at a high-school choir concert. There were several different choirs. One choir did an old spiritual, and the soloist stepped right up to the mike and proceeded to suck the heart and soul right out of it with a typical American-Idol solo, full of the chirpy, slide-into-every-note-so-I-don't-have-to-hit-a-precise-pitch,...

There was a post on alt.guitar recently. It said basically that whenever they got people together to jam, they could always find some available guitarist or else someone who couldn't play bass very well, and it always worked out. They were very much implying that playing bass was easy, and if the bass player wasn't very good it didn't really matter. The...

I'm no spring chicken and have been around the block once or twice. What I have really come to realize is that some guys have "it" and some don't. "It" being an instinctive sense for music. I have met some very talented technical musicians that for all their ability just did not have a sense or groove. It's hard to explain. Those of you that know...

I have a 73 4001 in Fireglo w/ Checkered Binding. Below is an Ebay auction for the same bass except it's a 74 - it has plain white binding. Is it a correct assumption that the 1973 Ricks were the last year w/ checkered binding? (BTW -I have nothing to do with this auction). Thanks ~ * cgi.ebay . com /NR-1974-Rickenbacker-4001-Jetglo-Player-Bas...

For what it's worth, in case anyone was wondering about Epifani cabs, here's an anecdote for ya... Friday night, outdoor gig, suddenly, for no apparent reason, the mains and monitors start making loud, blown-speaker noises every time I'd hit a loud, low note. No reason was found for it, and it healed itself after a while, but for a time I was taken...

Haven't bought it yet, but am considering purchase of a Bronco, for the kids. The PUP "problem" is cool, I'll start with pots and jack and see how that goes, maybe a Duncan Cool Rails bridge PUP. The ones I've seen have the two-saddle bridge. Similar to an old Tele bass I used to have that despite bending screws never was quite right, and only tuned up...

I'm not a big fan of Jack Blades but his "soap box" article on the last page really is right on. I especially liked the line about shoving your bass neck through the bass drum...some of them [drummers] need it. But it really is all about "owning the stage". SotR

Hey Folks, I was hoping someone here could help me out. I think I blew the fuse in my Hartke A100 combo amp. The head won't turn on and the fuse sounds like a maraca when you shake it and the glass has some black marks on it. So it seems blown to me :-). So my question is what type of fuse should I get as a replacement. The A100 manual says the fuse is...

Okay this has happened to everyone and WILL happen to everyone.....unless you are perfect and then you need to find another newsgroup. Anyhow, how do you gracefully get out of a trainwreck? Last night both guitar players, the bass player (me) and the singer got lost. The only good thing was that the drummer stayed on. So who should give and who should...

Fourth drummer in a month down the drain. This one has gone AWOL - won't respond to phone messages about scheduling next practice. I know where he lives. I have a boat, chain, cinder blocks, and water 5 minutes away. Is this the right way, or would a dumpster in a rat-infested part of town be a better place for his body?

All the following is for sale in the UK. All readers in the USA are most welcome to purchase, but I really suspect that the exchange rate won't be too attractive right now. :-) Parker P38V - £200. Well gigged, but excellent condition. Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe 5 String - £350 Mint - never gigged, few rehearsals Squier Jazz Bass Active 5 String £150 Mint...
