THE RELIGION OF ISLAM The first thing that one should know and clearly understand about Islam is what the word "Islam" itself means. The religion of Islam is not named after a person as in the case of Christianity which was named after Jesus Christ, Buddhism after Gotama Buddha, Confucianism after Confucius, and Marxism after Karl Marx. Nor was it named...

I had an argument with someone about this. He swears that chocolate truffles are sometimes made with actual truffles. (Blecch!) I've never heard of such a thing and can't imagine why anyone would do it. I'd like to know if they exist so I can be on my guard against them. If someone offers me a chocolate truffle, will I have to ask if there's truffles...

I just encountered something I've not seen before. As I was passing a nearby private school - junior high and high school, I'd say - a In'n'Out Burger truck was setting up at the curb in front. In'n'Out is a popular, probably regional chain. The truck looked a little larger than a conventional roach coach but not much. It was just before lunch time. --...

I have a Panasonic microwave that keeps throwing a 20A breaker. The data plate on the microwave says it should draw 12.7A max, and an amp clamp confirms that it's pulling 21A What could cause this? Is it likely to be fixable by an amateur, or is the microwave history? It's only about a year and a half old, but it's been heavily used in an office setting....

I found a 1 lb. still-sealed bag of baking yeast in the back of a cupboard dead as hell. It is years old and barely foams after proofing. Other than a proper landfill funeral I am wondering if there are any possible uses for it -- as nutrients ala adding Wheat Germ, that type of thing -- or maybe fish food (?) (looks kind of like it.) Sprinkle it on peanut-butter...

Just picked up a new carbon steel joyce chen wok. (I also have a new cooktop, with some high output burners) Looking at the recipe included for fried rice, it says to use a tsp of chinese brown gravy syrup(and specifically it says not soy sauce) Any idea what this could be. Oyster sauce maybee. I thought I was familiar with most asian ingrediants,...

I love Stonyfield yogurt. However, I have noticed that some containers I get the yogurt seems thick and rich and creamy smooth, and others seem a little more on the watery lighter chunky fluffy side. Neither of them smell bad, but I really like the thicker one. Is this my imagination (as my husband thinks) or is something going on with the yogurt that I...

Bobby Flay was on the local NPR affiliate yesterday. He seemed clueless about the toxicity of cedar wood. There's no question that heating cedar releases toxic phenols. He did provide one service though, by coming out fairly strongly against charcoal lighter fluid. No cedar planks for me, thank you. I'll stick with aluminum foil. --Bryan
