My daughter requested strawberry shortcake for her birthday, which happened to be on Thanksgiving this year. I had a container of Rich's Whip in the freezer, so defrosted it, and tried to whip it for dessert. Well the tea was ready, the fruit platter was empty, the rest of the nibbly parts of dessert were done, and the creme stillw as not whipped. What...

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I just cooked this up to serve as an appetizer for Thanksgiving dinner tonight. It's from an old Temple cookbox, produced by the Sisterhood of Temple Menorah, Chicago, IL, copyright 1960. I treasure this book as it includes recipes from my mother and grandmother. Sweet and Sour Meatballs Recipe By: Florence Korr (one of...

Sholem aleykham, That I post on Shabbat should tip you off that I'm a goy. I am originally from da Bronx, now living in North Hollywood, CA. My name was Cristofalo, but my Jewish friends at the Bronx High School of Science (Class of '52) called me Cristofalberg. I'm still in close contact with one of them. That's all why I know a very little Yiddish, poorly. I...

Those of us who have come to kashrut late usually find that there are foods we miss that are no longer acceptable. One of mine is New England clam chowder, thick and hot and creamy with the tang of the ocean. This recipe, that I picked up at the supermarket and then adapted to what was on hand, fills the empty place in my tummy (without those chewy bits...

Hi! I will be teaching a cooking oriented series of classes on how Jews around the world celebrate Shabbat, Pesach and Rosh Hashanah. Any recommendations for resources, both cookbooks and other sources (history texts, articles, even fiction which is well researched and documented), would be greatly appreciated. Am hoping to include how regional ingredients...

Hello, everyone, and Shabbat shalom. I have a question for which I desperately need an answer. I recently purchased a couple of frozen kishkas from a Kosher retailer in New York. When the two arrived, there were absolutely no instructions on either package as to how to cook the kishka. It appears that the outside wrapping is plastic; should I remove that...
