I am a home hobbyist who enjoys restoring vintage stereo equipment. I have a good working knowledge of electronic components and what they do. I have decent test equipment and good soldering skills, and most of the time I am able to track down and repair a particular problem. However, I do feel that I need to know more about the theory behind electronic...

The former uses variable-density while the latter uses variable-area.

Hi: In magnetic audio cassette, the maximum frequency that can be recorded is determined by the tape speed. What determines the maximum frequency that can be recording onto a variable-density optical track of a B&W film? Is tape speed still a factor here? Thanks, Radium

I'm trying to repair an old Arcam Alpha 3 amplifier I've been given. The power amp is shot, and I would like to use it as a pre-amp as it has tone controls which I can usefully use to play 78s. Does anybody have a circuit diagram for this please? I'm especially interested in the pre-amp section, round the tone and balance controls, as I need to take...

So I ask in this group as well. Is a 44.1 kHz sample rate sufficient to cover the entire human hearing...

Hi: What types of audio artifacts are specifically-associated with the variable-density optical tracks of B&W films? What are these artifacts caused by? Thanks, Radium

OK, here is the deal. I have never run across this situation before, and I really don't know what to do about it. A friend of mine has a Philips HTS6500 home theater DVD system. This system includes two front satellite speaker enclosures. Each speaker enclosure has three small full-range speakers inside of it. Each enclosure connects to the main...

Hi: Please don't get upset at me. I am simply asking a question out of interest. Oh, and no this is not a homework question. Variable-density was used to record sound into the those old B&W films before variable-area was invented. I like VD better than VA. What characteristics in the film material itself [e.g. the chemicals within the film, "grains",...

I'm wondering whether a Bose Acoustimass 3 Series III subwoofer (unpowered) will sound okay between the amplifier and two regular Bose 201 speakers. Would there be any sort of incompatility in the electronics?

Hi- I have some Infinity's RS 10's I think that are about 14 years old. I noticed that the outer part of the woofers is flaky (the spongy part)...I'm not sure what the material is called. Is it common for this to happen to speakers in time? Thanks
