The Brook amp sliding bias class A amp is shown with the 1947 schematic at http://www.tubecad.com/2007/12/blog0128.htm This has the pilot resistor R5 as a common cathode current sensing resistance. A two triode inverting dc amp amplifies the Ek and Vk at R5 and applies a negative going grid bias voltage as Ek rises. C27 filters out the ac content. So...

I recently aquired one of these. Large by todays standards, medium for the 50's. It sounds very nice and I would like another one, or possibly sell this one. It is very hard to see the drivers, but they look like the pictures of Hartlys I have seen. I found an old ad, which is how I know it is a Monte Carlo. According to the ad it has 6 drivers, but...

Googling also brought up a pdf of a 1947 design by Lincoln Walsh, see http://www.tubecad.com/2007/12/15/High-Quality%20Audio%20Amplifier%20With%20Automatic%20Bias%20Control.pdf I have not yet seen the LW design with IST and CFB from OPT to output stage; it lurks somewhere.... Patrick Turner.
