I can't find an auto tech newsgroup. VW wants $800 to change a $36 timing belt on the 1.9 Turbodiesel. Are they nuts? I guess i'll be doing that myself. Pushing 100k miles prolly should be changed. But a belt for timing? Why not a chain? Seems like the weak link in this engine that would have no problem going 300k miles. Have to tear it apart for a stinking...

My neighbour's 1982 Suzuki GN125 has had its carb (Mikuni VM20SS if I recall correctly, with a #35 idle jet) mangled a number of times over the last 25 years by various shops as well as by me. From the mileage, just over 2,000 kilometres, you can guess why. The carb' has been apart so many times it's not funny as there have been a few periods when she...

Hey, maybe someone here can help me. I have been building a track bike out of an old junked xs400 1980 model. Harness seemed in good shape, engine great, carbs rusted and full of crud from mud wasps. Found a set from an 82 XS400 Maxim in perfect shape for $20. Modified the mounting brackets to fit wider mounting (they are closer together on the 82 head)....

I've been using a Ctek charger on some of my older scoots (250's and a 400), without disconnecting the battery cables. A friend with a newish BMW 1200 (beautiful bike) told me you can't do that on his bike without risking damage to several of the electronics, so he disconnects the battery before giving a maintenance charge. Brief searching hasn't yet...

I hadn't heard of the civilian version... ARMORED WARFARE: Marine Motorbikes March 1, 2008: Over the last eight years, the U.S. Marine Corps has converted to the diesel powered M1030M1 (Kawasaki 650cc, KLR650) motorcycles. The KLR650 itself came out in 1991. The marine versions are used for reconnaissance and messenger duty. These diesel powered bikes...

I have a Goldwing GL1100 it sounds great and rides well, but after about 50 miles or so I can hear a clicking sound comming from the engine which graduly gets louder, if I stop the engine and restart it the clicking sound stops. can any one out there give me some idea as to what the problom might be. thanks

What is the least expensive way to improve the performance of a v twin motorcycle. I own a Vulcan 900, which has a top speed of 105 mph. I am not sure why is so slow at the top end. I have considered changing pipes, changing the air intake system, getting a commander that will change the timing of the fuel injection, or changing pulleys in increase top speed,...

I was just wondering, looking at that new Honda 1100cc thing, that's air-cooled, due to some rather clever ducting between the barrels... I mean, the Japanese have been building four-stroke fours for nearly 35 years now, and with modern pollution (noise, exhaust) I thought watercooled was here to stay. But I suppose if you're not after ultimate power,...

My sprocket ratio was 14 teeth on the drive and 50 teeth on the back wheel or 3.51. I want a higher ratio so I went to still 14 on the drive but 45 teeth on the back wheel. that makes it 3.21. So if my little sprocket was going 2000rpm's the back one was going 560 rpm's and now it's going 623 rpm's. Should get better fuel mileage now. Not against...

when i got my 400 the front wheel and carbs were in the basket. I think I got the carbs back together but I'm having trouble what parts come out of the basket and go on the front wheel. The books suck and the parts fisk don't tell me what some things are made of. I have two pairs of felt washers of different thicknesses and have a suspicion where they go...

I have swapped out the motor in my "74 Honda 550f. The new motor is said to be a "76, but I didn't see the bike it came out of. The original motor number is like CB550E-103xxx and the new one is CB550E-108xxx. My question is can I just plug the '76 stator / neutral / oil press motor plug into the '74 bike wire harness? Would It hurt anything electrical...

The ~It takes 30% more dino fuel to produce ethanol myth. Talked to my brother about this a while back and told him I had trouble finding credible sources for the quote. He told me: ~That is because some researchers at MIT questioned the clown who made the claim about his raw data and proved he was wrong to the point of him having to make a retraction....
