I know the subject of starters on the early XVs and Viragos is a hot one but somewhere I read that a worthwhile upgrade was to swap the standard XV750 starter for a modified XS650 starter. I kept my eyes open for such a beast, and thought I had found one, but after some preliminary dismantling the procedure is not obvious. So, was the original rumour...

SHORT VERSION OF LONG POST: Inner Primary Case appears to be leaking at bolt to tranny. Will applying silicone to the bolt and torquing the bolt to spec stop the primary oil leak? Long version: I=92ve checked the archives and didn=92t find any post on this problem (but that doesn=92t mean there=92s none there). My 2002 FXDL Low Rider has a leak behind...

Hey, how can I tell what kind of carburetor is installed in my bike? The owner before me put in these carbs that are a lot bigger than stock, and frankly I think it was a crap job. When I bought the bike, it was idling at 3K rpm, and after I bought it, it won't start. I want to go to stock carbs, but that costs a lot, and I already have burnt a lot of...

I just cleaned our a 4-stack of BS34's for one of my KZ1000Ps. There's a small, double-walled pipe that descends down from the carb body through the float-bowl gasket that fits into a gallery in the float bowl made just for it. Can someone tell me what that pipe goes to? I tried to remove it by gently twisting it with some pliers.. no joy. I cleaned...

I have a 2002 Kawasaki 500cc Vulcan. When I turn the ignition switch on it is totally dead. The horn, lights, etc do not work. The battery has been on a trickle charger and shows that it is charged. My small multimeter shows roughly 12 volts. When I jump start the bike using jumper cables, it starts right up and everything works. As soon as I remove the...

Helping a neighbour get her '74 Vespa 150 started, she left it in the damp winter weather and I think a little corrosion caused it to stall the other day and not start afterwards. This is an import from India with a home-made starting switch, the simple toggle kind, attached in the lockable left-storage compartment. By checking continuity I was able...

I have a 1980 CB750C with an open-circuit in the generator rotor. Before I go plunk down $160 for a rebuilt one, I was wondering if it's at all feasable to rebuild one myself. (I've got two, so even if I tear one up, I still have one for the core-charge if I buy one.) It looks like the hardest part would be getting it apart. I found the 4 screws under...

When shifting from 2nd into neutral, it usually ends up in 1st. Then when going from 1st into neutral, it ends up in 2nd. It seems that no matter how gentle I try to shift, it goes right past neutral. Why is this and what can I do to rectify the problem? I'm using 10-40 oil and just got the oil replaced, so i don't suppose it's slipping due to bad oil. The...

The low beam on my '83 Suzuki GS450L burned out. OK, no problem, just replace the headlight. Wrong! Suzuki used this strange headlight with mounting ears built into the headlight. A standard headlight can't be used. And of course Suzuki no longer makes the headlight :-(. So I've got to find a regular 6" headlight nacelle that'll mount to the 450...

I have a limp clutch lever on 2002 YZF600. I assume the clutch cable broke. Is there a quick way to fix that, if only temporarily?

I've got a 1996 Honda Shadow VT1100C. I got it all ready to roll today, and as I squeezed the clutch lever, it had no pressure to it whatsoever, and it didn't function. It is a hydraulic clutch system, so the first thing I did was to check the master cylinder. It had no fluid. It worked fine when I used it last. I assumed that the fluid had leaked out...
