I've been looking at schools of photography, and it has become apparent that there is a difference among schools that may be most easily deliniated as between art and technology. For instance, if you look at the classes offered by the Rochester Institute of Technology (rated #4 by US News & World Report), they are quite technical. Same goes for the...

Hi, Circa 1970 I had a photo business specializing in 4x5 but have done nothing serious since. Now I'm retired to Florida (where else :-) I would like to get back in. I have 4x5 cameras, some old lenses, even some dark room equipment, but absolutely no place for a dark room. But I do have a computer and that raises many questions. I have a 4 mp snapshot...

I loved landscape photography very much but my landscapes were always boring flat lines, glorious and beautiful flowers in my garden lacked the spectacular detail they had in real life, night time shots were always blurry, never getting the sharpness or quality I wanted, action shots were just as bad and out of focus all the time. The people shots I took...

Hi All, I'm a "casual" photographer... I invest more time than the average hobbyist photographer into learning photography but I'm not a professional photographer. Better yet, I'm a software engineer that once had dreams to be a professional photographer. I started photography in the late 80's with 35mm and my own B&W darkroom. Recently I've jumped...

I'm refurbishing a rescued (from a university bin) DeVere 54 enlarger. It was minus baseboard, lens panel and lens (but bellows still present) and light source, all of which have been made good by DIY methods and eBay. (Light source is a ply box lined with mirrors and with 4 x 60W bulbs, shone through an opal glass diffuser). It's all but ready to go, initially...

I dropped by one of the local pro photo places to pick up a few things this afternoon, and noticed a couple of press cameras on a shelf by the checkout. Both 4x5 Crown Graphics; one old (side viewfinder) and beat up; the other newer with a top viewfinder and apparently in good condition. When I asked about them I was told they're rentals. Not for taking...

Does anyone have any trade photographic publications from around the turn of the century, or up to the First World War from R&J Beck Opticians Ltd of 68 Cornhill London? I need information on the covering power of their No3 Biplanat, of 6" focus. The old catalogues often quoted the plate sizes that a lens covered. This lens seems to be a Beck original...

Your photography equipment needs are minimal. You'll need a basic SLR camera - film or digital. For additional control and future options, the flash should be removeable. You'll also need lenses to cover the standard range of portrait shooting distances, a couple zoom lenses will work admirably. Clearly, more camera gear is better, but this will handle getting...

On Ebay I have seen two sorts of 4x5 film: ERA and Shanghai. They are both of 100ASA speed. I am curious about them. Has anybody here tried them? As the vendors usuallty prefer PayPal, is it safe to use it to that area?

Hi ng, can someone please explain to me why the resolution of a lens is normally determined at the point of the MTF where the modulation is only 50%? Is this done due to some perceptual reasons? Best regards! Gregory Wool

My f64 backpack finally crapped out after several years: failed zippers. I have LF equipment including a Wisner camera that is above average in size, plus 5 lenses, plus Stuff. What backpack do you suggest I buy? Thanks, Art

In a recent post, I received a lot of help. I wished to thank everyone for this. I have decided to shoot the large format of course, but I will also be using a cheap DSLR with decent manual focusing lenses, all in raw, of couse, and trying to create a "look" that I prefer. I never got heavily into 35mm film, but I did love the tones of Provia 100 and then...

Seeking an alternative to the now defunct Kodak Tech Pan 2415 film, I have been casting an eye on holographic film as a spossible substitute. I would appreciate anyone's experience in working and/or testing this type of film, re increasing sensitivity by various hypersensitization methods, processing and control of its speed, both as a general-use film...
