GSM Cell Phone Coverage

I plan to visit Cancun in June or July and would like information regarding
buying a SIM locally. Is there a preferred carrier? Are long distance
rates (calls back to the east coast of the USA) very costly?

Thanks for any information.

Just make sure to call your carrier in the US to remove the lock. Most
cell phones cannot be used with other companies SIM cards.

Check out Movistar: http://www.movistar.com.mx/prepago/p_prep_unic.html
(prices in local currency so divide by 10 roughly). Looks like 35
cents a min to USA.

Best wishes, Marcus

The site is in Spanish and I don't speak or read Spanish. Thanks anyway.

The 'Visiting Mexico' link off of the main page is useless. Although in
English, it does not give any information about cost or where to buy SIMs.
Whenever you try to go back to look at another link from 'Visiting Mexico'
you are kicked off the site completely and have to start all over again.

See if babelfish or other translator works. I doubt you will have much
trouble finding a store once you get there. They should sell them in
all stores that has anything to do with cell phones. I have never had
to buy anything in an official Movistar store. Observe that you have
to buy the SIM card and separate cards to charge it. I paid like 3
bucks for the SIM.
