New Steroid Nasal Spray--Omnaris (Ciclesonide)--available yet?

It looks like the first new inhaled steroid to come out in years, is finally
available in the USA. Not sure of that though.

I've been reading about ciclesonide for a few years now. It is really
supposed to have some benefits over previous inhaled steroids, much less
absorbed systemically, etc. I believe it has been out in Europe for a couple
years now, and was approved by the FDA quite some time ago. I wondered when
it would actually become available here in the USA.

Now, if one looks at the web site:

w w w .omnaris . com

(Omnaris will be the brand name for the nasal spray preparation, there is
another name for the asthma inhaler), it looks like it might actually be
available now--they even have a rebate offer, etc.)

Does anyone here know for sure, if it is actually available in pharmacies
now? Anyone reading used it yet? Did you notice any difference?

(Also, I recall reading a couple years ago, that a new antihistamine nasal
spray is coming out (besides Astelin), with the same active ingredient as
the antihistamine in Patanol eye drops. Anyone here know anything about that
one--when it will become available, if there have been tests comparing its
efficacy with Astelin, etc.?)

One problem with a lot of these "new" meds is that it might take years
for them to be on a formulary list for a HMO. This means that you
have to pay full price for it or use one that is on their formulary.

I paid $40 for a month's supply of omnaris.

Yes, I got it from Wallgreens. I find it to be gentler on the nose,
but more effective.Lasts longer so I only use it once a day.

Re: New Steroid Nasal Spray--Omnaris (Ciclesonide)--available yet?

I have been using it now. Covered by my insurance. Available now in all US
pharmacies.

Cannot say I notice any difference.

Studies do show less systemic absorption though (look it up). And (as
Rhinocort), it does not contain benzalkonium.

So, it might be the safest one to use. I don't know that it is more or less
effective than others. Certainly worth a try for all using a steroid nasal
spray, if you can talk your doctor into prescribing it (so new here, he or
she might not already be familiar with it), and if your insurance will cover
it.
