In recent years the Chinese traditional medicines are becoming more
and more popular in foreign countries. The market of traditional drugs
and nutritional food are booming in USA, Europe, especially in
Germany. It provides good oppurtunities for the herbal pharmaceutical
companies to expand their markets worldwide. Meanwhile the advanced
biotechnologies are applied to improve the traditional ingredients.
New strategies, new marketing and new technologies are the keys to
success for herbal companies worldwide. There are chances and risks.
Increasing health costs worldwide
lead to higher acceptance and use of herbal medicine with the
traditional chinese medicine as a brand counting for 24 percent market
share worldwide in 2007.

The main risks are in Scientific evidence for some herbal medicines
and for some of the therapies. Unregulated or inappropriate use of
traditional medicines and practices can have negative or dangerous
effects. Further research is needed to ascertain the efficacy and
safety of several other practices and medicinal plants.
Another related issue is that at present, the requirements for
protection provided under international standards for patent law and
by most national conventional patent laws are inadequate to protect
traditional knowledge and biodiversity.
