Curis Inc. reports that it is moving forward with its collaboration with
Genentech Inc. on development of Curis' Hedgehog antagonist drug for
treating cancer.
South San Francisco-based Genentech (NYSE: DNA), which has manufacturing
facilities in Vacaville, plans to launch three Phase 2 clinical trial
plans for GDC-0449 in 2008, according to officials. Upon the treatment of
the first patient in the trial, Cambridge-based Curis (NASDAQ: CRIS) could
receive a $3 million cash milestone payment, according to an original
collaboration deal the two companies signed in June 2003.
The planned Phase 2 clinical trials include a trial in metastatic
colorectal cancer during the first quarter 2008, and trials in advanced
basal cell carcinoma, as well as a trial in an undisclosed advanced solid
epithelial tumor during the second half of 2008. Once testing has begun on
that epithelial tumor, a second $3 million payment could be triggered.
Curis already received a $3 million cash milestone payment from Genentech
for the initiation of Phase 2 testing in advanced basal cell carcinoma in
October 2007. The company reported a net loss of $7 million for 2007 on
revenue of $16.4 million.
