"Low iron is know to cause mental confusion however."
Quite true (yes I got the humor also)
AND
I don't know how long it has been known (Decades) that high care should be
taken (only when REALLY defined) on giving children any iron supplements.
The same goes for seniors (men over 17 or women past menopause)
That doesn't exclude that many are prescribed a B complex including Folate
to make proper use of iron.
Minerals have a fast acting dichotomy. They are an absolute requirement but
can build.
Insufficient amounts of any can be disastrous and once a critical positive
amount is reached the negatives set in. Many many more people suffer from
insufficiency in certain (most) minerals than suffer from over exposure.
And, yes, there is no research that has shown that it is even POSSIBLE to
overload on iron with meats, even overloading on liver doesn't do it.
A point of curious interest: Any of the know negatives of liver are
countered with onions (Sufficiency can be debated). The favorite method of
serving liver is liver and onions.
