Hepatitis B Virus Found in Sweat of Olympic Wrestlers

IZMIR, Turkey, March 1 -- Hepatitis B virus testing and immunization
should be mandatory for professional or Olympic athletes participating
in contact sports, a small Turkish study suggests.

Advise patients that this study supports the idea that HBV infection
may be transmitted via sweat in contact sports.
Nearly 13% of Turkish Olympic wrestlers whose blood was tested were
found to have occult HBV infection, said Selda Bereket-Yücel, M.D., of
the Celal Bayar University here, online in the British Journal of
Sports Medicine.


In many of the infected wrestlers, the virus was detected in their
sweat as they trained, which suggests it might be easily transmitted
to fellow wrestlers, the study found.

And with this TYPE of .. inaction .. BY one of the foremost
hepatitis .. websites .. I suppose we can expect this type of ..
inaction to .. continue .. FAR into the present / forthcoming
school .. year .. ?

Football , basketball , rugby .. AND .. wrestling ..

No matter none of them are contact sports ..

Are they .. ?

Jeez .. they are ..

Sooo .. now that I .. know .. the sweat of these .. athletes
contain .. hepatitis .. do I / do YOU .. **allow** your kid to .. play
these .. sports .. ?

Do you warn your brother and his nephews .. ?

Do you .. ?

Just wondering .. ?

Or is there enough information .. to warrant .. this .. warning .. ?

I think there is ..

Sweat containing .. hep .. ?

Comeon ..

Someone isn't doing their .. job ..

And it is .. them.

But NOW .. at this present .. time .. it is up to ME .. to be the bad
guy again ..

"No son .. you cannot play .. contact sports with these .. virus laden
losers .. " ..

Because .. ?

They refuse to .. quit .. playing .. WHEN they carry hepatitis.

My .. waxing on .. was merely for that .. little guy .. over there ..

He doesn't .. know .. the iron levels in his kid are high enough to
allow him to catch the hepatitis .. virus ..

Withholding iron from potential pathogens is a host defense strategy.
There is evidence that iron overload per se compromises the ability

phagocytes to kill microorganisms. Several hypotheses exist to

infection in these patients. A review of the current literature
delineating various pathogens to which patients with hemochromatosis
are potentially susceptible, and recent advances in the understanding
of the association of hemochromatosis with infection, are discussed.

In all the .. explanations FOR this .. phenomenon .. not once do they
mention the .. FACT .. it is the MOST .. of ALL .. the sports ..
wrestling is THE .. **contact** .. sport .. ?

They do not .. speculate THAT .. fact ..

I wonder why ..

Must be one of those .. cans of worms .. we hear about .. ?

They have been passing it / hepatitis .. around for .. awhile .. ?

Sort of like that .. herpes .. virus .. ?

Highest is rugby and wrestlers ..
I wonder if rugby players ALSO have this high hep-B rate .. ?

One could do that kind of study in ones' .. haid ..

Herpes outbreak triggers wrestling ban in Minnesota

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An outbreak of a contagious rash called herpes
gladiatorum among Minnesota high school wrestlers led the state to
suspend matches and halt contact practices, authorities said on
Wednesday.
The eight-day suspension affecting 7,500 wrestlers on 262 teams was
the first time a U.S. state's entire high school program in a sport
has been shut down, authorities said.
