pain in the leg

Hello,

a friend of mine had a prostata surgery,
now (one week after it) he has pains in his right leg.
Directly after the surgery he had a little bad
feeling in the big toe, now he has pains up to
the inside of his leg.

Is this a known problem?
Thanks,
Ernst Sauer

I suggest you post that question in alt.support.cancer.prostate. Big,
friendly audience . . . [until the spammers come out to play '-) ]

It is probably not serious, unless caused by some condition other than
prostate cancer.

I have heard of cases of pain after da Vinci (commonly and incorrectly
called "robotic") surgery. This is caused by the use of restraints for
the several hours the surgery requires. The patient is lying head-down
at a large angle, I think about 45º

If he is very concerned, he should ask the doctor about it.

Steve J

Pain in the leg can be caused by a variety of things. It may be totally
unrelated to his surgery. But it is also possible he has a blood clot
in his leg from the surgery. That is not very likely, but it is very
dangerous when it happens. He should consult his doctor immediately to
be sure he doesn't have a clot.

The doctor said this is not the problem, he gave him
pills against the pains and said "let us wate a week".

Because of the surgery my friend lost some lymph nodes,
and the question is if this can result in pains; or if some
nerves located to the (former) prostata can cause the pains.

Thanks

I'm repeating this, as its first SEND seems to have failed:

Lymphadema is not uncommon after prostate surgery involving lymph node
removal. Its more common effect is a variety of swelling scenarios, but
it can produce pain, too. Some of the PC books mention it, but you'll
quickly find much more information about it if you Google keywords such
as lymphadema prostate surgery leg pain.

Re: pain in the leg

If you ever saw the position they put you in for the surgery you would
understand why people have aches and pains afterwards. I have heard
men mainly complain of back pain, but the bending and manipulation that
takes place could, I suppose (not a doctor here), cause some nerve
pinching or the like and result in leg pain. I suffer with pain in the
leg and foot, left side only, and my primary care doctor told me it is
caused by pinching of the nerves where they come out of the spine. He
told me that is a common complaint of older people.

However, as one of the others said, it could also be related to a clot,
and that can be deadly. So it should be taken seriously for sure.

Good luck to your friend. I had pain in my bottom for six months after
the surgery (I had RRP but the pain was in the perineum??). Most men
do not, but I understand what it is like to have discomfort after the
prostate surgery.
