TURP vs Proscar
TURP vs Proscar
I am writing this for my husband.
He is 78 and in quite good health except for recent episodes
of urinary bladder stones that are creating low level
infections. PSA level is at 3.
His prostate is very enlarged. This happened before about
15 years ago and he had a successful TURP procedure which
brought about a reduction in size.
My prostate is again very large and has been implicated in
some difficulties in fully emptying the bladder from time to
time. He has no trouble urinating and no other symptoms but
there is a real concern because of the size (don't know the
actual measurement).
Two courses of action have been suggested: TURP or Proscar.
There is a concern that the Proscar would create side
effects such as diminished libido, breast growth etc. and
the necessity of continuing to take the medication indefinitely.
The TURP of course, would be a one time procedure.
All thoughts and experiences appreciated.

I take Proscar. It is not really expected to reduce symptoms, not very
much anyway. Its purpose is to reverse growth of the prostate and
after that, slow its growth.
Side effects have been moderate or less (don't know exactly because I
am also taking Flomax). Libido is fine, and no breasts either... maybe
too bad because I would want to play with them.
The TURP is not necessarily a one-time procedure because the prostate
will continue to grow. Depending on the size of the prostate, a TURP
can be pretty risky because of bleeding. A PVP (green light laser
procedure) is supposed to reduce those risks.
Maybe what he needs is a PVP and after that Proscar to prevent
regrowth.
