returning once again
I've been reading this ng off and on for about 7 years. I have BPH, I had
TUMT about 5 years ago, so far I've had no problems with flow and it seems
to have worked pretty well. My prostate continues to become larger and
larger. I don't remember the size of my prostate, I think 80 grams (?) Does
that seem feasible? My PSA's have pretty much been all over the place from
the 4's up to 9. I was using Saw Palmetto until I heard it can give false
low readings. Since I've stopped using it, my PSA's have been in the 6
area. I've had 4 biopsies, they've all come back clear. My uro put me on
Avodart a month ago to, hopefully, shrink my prostate. Since then I can't
seem to maintain an erection for more than a couple minutes. It's almost
impossible for me to have an ejaculation. I don't like this at all. My uro
advised against using Viagra and the other ED meds due to Ischemic Optic
Neuritis which I was diagnosed with 4 years ago. I wasn't aware of the
connection between Viagra and ION until recently. I haven't talked with my
optometrist about the possibility of Viagra being the cause of the ION,
although I'm due to see him in a couple weeks. .
Is this a common reaction to using Avodart? Is there any hope of regaining
the ability of getting an erection? Are there any other options to raising
an erection without the use of Viagra and it's counterparts? Is the pump a
viable option? It's not exactly a spontaneous thing. I'm aware of the
injection method, but the expense hardly seems worth it. I'm very up-front
with my uro, I'm not shy about asking him anything and everything, although
I haven't talked to him since starting Avodart. I see him every 4 months,
next appt is in April.

Maybe ask your uro if Proscar is an option for you. I understand that
it does not kill off the libido as much as Avodart does.

Maybe ask your uro if Proscar is an option for you. I understand that
it does not kill off the libido as much as Avodart does.

He put me on Proscar before I had the TUMT and it didn't seem to do much
good.

Proscar doesn't do much to relieve symptoms. Its purpose, like
Avodart's, is to stop the prostate from growing. That's worth
something, don't you think?

impotence ng and see what informatin I can gather there.

You should ask on alt.support.impotence about the injections. Many of
the regulars there use them and don't seem to have a problem with
their cost. I don't myself but I think your anticipation of high
expense is perhaps due to a misunderstanding of the dosage. The
biggest problem I would see is the fear of injuring something although
the guys there say this is unfounded.
You could also try Yohimbine for (mainly) facilitating ejaculation. It
only seems to work for about 30% of the guys who try it but you might
be lucky. Not for use if you have hypertension or are subject to
anxiety attacks.
Another alternative is MUSE, pellets that you insert in your urethra.
The problem here is that most guys think that they cause significant
penile pain but again not all.
Some people have success with the pump but others report that it just
gives them a "chubby" (increase in size without stiffness) and of
course it doesn't do anything for ejaculation.
Avodart and Proscar work on the problem of hyperplastic tissue by
eliminating the body's ability to convert testosterone to DHT however
this is only part of the reason for the growth. The other side seems
to be an increase in estrogen (E2) which protects the prostate cells
from programmed cell death. It's not at all conclusive but there's a
new drug in clinical trials (someone said it's J&J's) which seems to
work on this theory. If it's successful it might be a way of reducing
prostate size without killing the sexual function. Google is your
friend.

I had the same reaction to Avodart - complete loss of libido, poor
erections, retro, all within a couple of days of starting it. I quit
it after a couple of months with no BPH syptom relief, and had only
partial return of libido, etc. There were some very old posts on this
NG that said these side effects of Avodart were permanent, and my
experience seems to bear that out. I wound up with low testosterone,
and I think the Avodart may have contributed to that, since it raises
E2, which is converted from testosterone and drives the T down.
Anyway, if you are having these symptoms, I would get off the Avodart
immediately, if having a sex life is an any way important to you. And
the low T and high E2 make you weak, tired, and foggy-brained in
addition to the sexual effects. If you're not having BPH symptoms, the
80 gram prostate isn't that big a deal. You can always get a PVP if
you start having problems.
