I suspect that you mean a PET scan. Your doctor must have some reason
for asking for the scan. There are some differences in the appearance of
a PET scan in a patient with depression compared to 'normal'. He or she
may also be looking for signs of Alzheimer's disease or other focal
abnormalities that can sometimes look like depression clinically.
As far as the panic attacks go, there are really very few options. I
don't suspect that they'll want to give you any sedatives since they
could alter the results. You could try calling the hospital or lab and
see if you can go in to see the machine. Sometimes that helps.
It's not a case of the doctor "not understanding." There are really very
few diagnostic tests to investigate this sort of thing. If you panic and
can't go through with the test, then the doctor won't have any results,
and you will not be any closer to getting help.
I have had to pull many people out from under a gamma camera because
they're panicking. Most of the time I can use my unofficial psychology
skills to help the patient through the test. Other times though, they
are so upset that they simply can't (or won't) finish the test. In those
cases, the scans are incomplete and serious conditions like heart
disease or cancer can, and probably do, go undiagnosed. I'm not trying
to sound harsh, but you can't expect your doctor to be able to help you
if they can't find out what's wrong in the first place.
