Re: how to get started? That depends. Where are you?
In the US and Canada, first you need to make it through a
Bachelor's degree on a pre-professional track.
The program advisors at whatever college or university
you end up going to will be able to help you with that.
At some point during the 4th year of your undergrad,
and provided you haven't changed your mind yet about
going to medical school, you'll need to figure out what
medical schools you want to apply to, study for and
take the MCAT, and then send out applications and
go on interviews.
Then, provided you find a medical school to get accepted to,
you'll have to finish up 4 years there and pass two USMLE
exams to become a doctor.
Some time during the 4th year of med school, and provided you
haven't changed your mind yet about going into radiology,
you will start looking for radiology residency programs you want
spend the next 4 or 5 years in. Then you will have to send out
applications, go on interviews and wait for The Match.
Once you've been accepted, you'll either do 1 year of
internship, or 1 transitional year before starting in your radiology
residency. I think there's a third USMLE exam in there somewhere.
After 4 years and making it past the 3 parts of the
ABR board exam, you can call yourself a radiologist.
Then you can head off to practice somewhere, or decide to do an
additional 1 or two year fellowship in some subspecialty of
radiology.
A nice summary of the process is here
