of thromboembolism with resultant neurological events and the
potential of stroke. Conventionally, the extent of carotid disease is
assessed from the degree of narrowing of the vascular lumen. This is
determined either directly using diameter measurements with catheter-
injected x-ray angiography, or indirectly using velocity measurements
