I expect so. Obviously, giving aid to sick people is deserving of a very
long sentence. After all, it's a war on drugs (except for the class A
drugs alcohol and tobacco).

I doubt it, probably because the courts, not always daft, realised that
while what these people were doing was illegal, it was nevertheless
humane and to be respected for that.

It does seem like the system came up with a sensible result in this case.
