WESTBORO - Boston scientists want to see if maintaining bone health as
people age is as simple as stepping on a vibrating platform for 10 minutes a
day.

Or ride a Harley-Davidson... more fun.

With or without religion,
you would have good people doing good things
and evil people doing evil things.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

That sounds fun but the gadget needed is quite expensive. ;-) More
affordable and probably also more efficient way to improve bone density is
the use of Flexi-Bar. It is a swinging bar that was developed by German
physiotherapists. To my knowledge there are no studies showing that
Flexi-Bar actually improves bone density but as it vibrates 270 times a
minute it is very likely that it does. I have tried it but I have not
purchased it, yet. The exercise is very efficient although it does not look
like it.

Re: Good vibrations may help deter osteoporosis

In the scientific studies, bone growth was only accomplished when the
vibrations had a certain range of frequency and amplitude. Vibrations
outside that range can be ineffective or harmful. I'm using the
Soloflex WBV platform (because it's cheap) but it's uncertain whether
it's really doing any good. One serious researcher told me that that
Soloflex WBV is "a toy...at best."

I received some information by email that the German osteoporosis foundation
uses Flexi-Bar for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Flexi-bar looks like the Cardioblade that I've seen in the USA.

Cardioblade is a particular type of Bodyblade. Bodyblade Classic might be
more suitable for bone strengthening exercise, not sure though.

Re: Good vibrations may help deter osteoporosis

There is another recent article in a medical journal showing good
results. The article is "Low-frequency vibratory exercise reduces the
risk of bone fracture more than walking: a randomized controlled
trial." You can see the abstract on PubMed, 17137514. The WBV
technique was different than other studies I have read about. In this
study, participants did 3 sessions per week for 8 months. Each
vibratory session included 6 bouts of 1 minute, with 1 minute rest
between bouts. The vibrating group had hip BMD 4.3% better than the
walking group.

Here is another vibrating platform.
