How careful do I have to be, really?

How careful do I have to be, really?

I'm a 60 year old male, recently diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism,
which apparently has been slowly disolving my bones for a few years. A
DEXA bone density scan gave T-scores of -2.2, -1.2, -2.6 for spine, hip
and forearm respectively.

The report included the statement "Ensure fall prevention measures are
in place", but I suspect this is just boilerplate.

The endocrinologist is busy working on the parathyroid problem but isn't
addressing osteoporosis directly. Presumably, fixing the first will take
care of the second, eventually.

I'm not a daredevil and have never broken a bone in my life, but as I
was up on a ladder pulling snow off the roof this morning, this question
just popped into my head :-)

I'm a 64 year old female with similar T-score readings. I do use common
sense when it comes to safety but I haven't let osteopenia control my life.
I still ride bikes and have taken a couple of spills but I could have easily
fallen just walking across a street, too.

I wouldn't be on a roof but that's because I don't like heights :)
