FGF-1 (yawn)There was a news item yesterday which seemed too good to be true,
concerning FGF (human fibroblast growth factor) from CardioVascular
BioTherapeutics. The press release stated that: "FGF-1 was almost 20-
fold more potent, on a weight basis, than parathyroid hormone (PTH) in
stimulating bone formation in mice." That seems to be saying that
FGF-1 grew 20 times as much new bone as PTH. But on closer
examination of the figure caption (on the http :// home.businesswire, com
web site) states that "It should be noted that the amount of FGF-1
injected was 20 fold less than PTH, on a weight basis" and the figure
shows that PTH and FGF-1 had the same amount of new bone growth. So
FGF-1 might possibly prove to be as good as PTH (Forteo) in humans,
but not 20X better.
