Osteonecrosis

Hey man I got this tremendous toothache from a broken wisdom tooth and
the only local dentist refused me treatment citing that I have severe
osteoporosis and my current regiment is actonel, and it being like
fosamax and considering my awesome fracture history, including breaking
the jaw at one time. He said the risk of my jawbone rotting away with
osteonecrosis like a rotten banana peel is too much of a liability. He
said possibly an oral surgeon about 50 miles away from me may or may not
extract the tooth. Beside he probably looked me up and down, noting the
shaggy beard, not-new clothes, patient info form said 'Space #5"
(Stereotypical trailer trash as my income went from $45k annual to $12k
because of the crippling disability of osteoporosis)

Now of course the oral surgeon will charge me an outrageous amount just
for a consultation and probably tell me to get lost. Besides its a major
holiday week.

I'm a gonna get real drunk and yank it out with pliers.

This group is dead anyway so no one will read this crap.

I read it. Sorry. If you sign a release the Dentist would be able
attempt an extraction without risk to himself though you may need
a lawyer to draft it. Did he propose anything short of an extraction
say a cap or even a root canal and a cap?

Osteoporosis and the ailments that lead to it are too often
rather poorly treated, IMO.

I will also warn you that wisdom teeth go deep into the jaw bone so
what you do will your pliers will also be dangerous.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Don't know what to suggest, though.

Best of luck.

I read it. My wife has osteoporosis and is on Forteo, so we monitor
this group regularly.

I'm sorry to hear about your dental and jaw problem. That sucks.

I hope you do NOT try to extract the tooth yourself. You could do
some serious damage. Find a competent oral surgeon. If you have
trouble paying the bill, most legitimate medical providers will work
with you to get to soemthing you can afford.

Re: Osteonecrosis

Hi Bonepain: Sorry but I read this too... I had a similar situation with a
dentist who refused to extract a molar, that I already had a root canal on. I
took Actonel for over a year in 2005, and have not had any fractures or jaw
problems. I found a oral surgeon to extract it and he charged me 175.00 for it.
They offered a payment plan, but I didn't take it. I had a credit card I could
use and did. So far it's healing fine, and I did sign the usual release but
nothing was stated about osteonecrosis. The oral surgeon I used has had 2
patients that had ONJ, but each had been on the iv infused med, not the oral.
I'm on forteo, and they are now using it after extractions to help the bone fill
in.

Good luck finding a surgeon and I wouldn't pull it either, you need to extract
it with out unnecessary bone trauma.
