I have a question

Hi All,

My brother has osteoporosis. He was wondering if a person would have pain
with this disease or if it is a painless disease? His back has been
giving him a lot of problems. TIA

I have osteoporosis and my spine is curved forward somewhat
and my spine is very visible. I sometimes have upper back and
neck pain that can trigger a headache. The pain seems to be
caused mainly by muscle tension that is caused by the curvature
making lifting things not as easy. I don't really feel anything
that would seem to be pain in the bones themselves.

I am a 47 year old male.

Thanks for the info, Mark. My brother is 52 years old. I'll give him
this info. Thanks again. I'm sorry you have to go through this.

Is he getting enough vitamin D? There is some evidence that a sufficient
dose of vitamin D does reduce back pain. I suggest assessing the blood
vitamin D levels [25(OH)D].

Also, if the pain is osteoporosis related which I think is quite possible, a
drug called calcitonin should reduce pain. Calcitonin is very safe. I think
that he should discuss with his doctor about the subject.

I am not a physician though.

Thanks so much for your reply. He's been trying to get enough Vit. D.
I'll tell him what you said. Thanks again.

Please notice that the dose of vitamin D should ideally be based on the
assessment of wintertime vitamin D status, not on some idea of a fixed dose
that is supposed to be sufficient. The achieved vitamin D levels are highly
individual.

The optimal vitamin D levels are at least 80 nmol/l, and preferrably between
90-100 nmol/l. This is according to a Harvard study published last year.

:-) You can also tell him that in addition to calcium and sufficient dose of
vitamin D vitamin K is also very important -- it does not improve bone
mineral density that much but it does prevent fractures. So, he might want
to consider supplementation with vitamin K, preferrably a product containing
also some vitamin K2.

The other possibility is to eat a diet high in vitamin K. The best source of
dietary vitamin K is the fermented Japanese soy food /natto/. Quite good
sources of vitamin K are also spinach, broccoli and parsley. Eating a daily
green salad would be a very good idea.

This is just one of a long list of chronic problems, but I still manage
to work and go camping and go bicycle riding, so it isn't all bad. I am
not about to let this stop me from doing things.

If he is having some back pain, what I did was get a gel pack that
can be heated up in the microwave and I apply this to the location
of muscle pain and it helps a lot. These things can be heated up
many times so they are very cheap to use. A lot less expensive
that the chemical heat packs.

Pain can come from a fractured bone that was caused by osteoporosis.
It's advisable to check out if he has fractures.

What they did for me was a procedure called a skeletal survey where
a series of x-rays are made of all of the skeletal bones that are like
to be affected. I have also had numerous CT scans going from the
upper thighs to the lower edge of my skull, so they have plenty
of images to know what is going on. Some micro fractures can occur
with little or no pain, so I am glad that they have this information
in order to know whether I have any bone problems that need fixing.

This was actually something ordered by my cancer specialist for
another reason, but it applies to osteoporosis as well.
