Help selecting medication

Group,

I have posted twice today and have another to compose besides this one.
Forgive me if I plead that I haven't time left to research all previous
posts for the answer to the following question.

As indicated in my post on pH monitoring today, I am opening my mind up to
taking Fosamax or Boniva or some other medication.

I would like to find a med that has been proven not only to give better DEXA
results, but that has been found to reduce fracture rates. I would also
like some assurance that long term use will be safe, and will not lead to
friable or brittle bones later in life.

I shall appreciate any advice you may wish to share. A simple reference to
a previous message, by date and author and time, would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Ole

Re: Help selecting medication

I think all bisphosphonate meds claim to interrupt bone resorption or
improve bone density and reduce fracture risk. It's a matter of finding
the right one for you.

As for long-term risks, these drugs are not without them and there is no
way to be assured. It so happens that the risks (as with any medication)
is relatively low.

The safest thing you can do is to have a good endocrinologist who has
expertise in metabolic bone disorders monitor your treatment, your bone
density, and your rate of bone resorption (there are several tests, but
the one I know of is called Urinary NTx). If your urinary NTx goes too
low, the dosage or administration frequency should be reduced/increased
as low NTx increases risk for brittle bones (and believe me it won't
take until "later in life").

Good luck.

Re: Help selecting medication

I have been taking Fosomax for 5 years. I had a bone density test
yesterday, I have improved to Osteopenia.

My MD recommends that I take 1200 calcium + D a day, and in 2 years get
another test.
