Boniva, Fosamax and ONJ

Anyone here taking these drugs sufficiently concerned to stop? If *nothing*
is allowed to be present in your stomach during the absorption period, empty
stomach and all, what gives with Fosamax Plus D? Isn't Vitamin D something?

I get my vitamin D with my citrate calcium.
MD prescribed Fosamax 70 mg once a week 3 years ago. I had some
improvement in my bone density with this dosage in 2 years.

I do not know if there is a different price for Fosamax + D. than the
regular Fosamax.

My question relates to the problem of Fosamax and Vit D being in your
stomach at the *same* time. The instructions for taking the original regular
Fosamax as well as Boniva say that *nothing* at all should be in your
stomach, (that they must be taken on an _empty_ stomach). Obviously this is
not so because Fosamax Plus D puts both those substances in your stomach
simultaneously

Someone wrote a post that I found to be rather alarming around Christmas
time. I actually stopped the Fosamax because of what I read. I missed two
doses until my regular dental appointment. I took what was written to my
dentist, and asked all my questions. In my case there is nothing to
indicate that there is a problem with my jaw. I happen to have pre TMJ, and
have worn a night guard for more than 20 years. The symptoms I thought I
might have were normal, and were not what would be an indication of the bone
weakening that was described in the post.

My dentist spent some time with me, and I left feeling much more confident
than I had before. I love the exchange of ideas on this Newsgroup, and on
other Forums. But I feel secure in knowing that my dentist and doctors
study these drugs, read all they can get their hands on, and are very
current with what is happening.

I don't know why I cannot even drink coffee for a half hour the morning of
the Fosamax, but if the vitamin D is part of the pill, I feel personally
secure that my body will not regard it as food. I wonder what harm could
come from black coffee. I wonder if we couldn't even have a cup of black
coffee and take the pill a half hour later. If more of us were men, we
might be able to do that. But I don't make an exception, I just smell the
coffee for 30 minutes.

I just said that I feel confident, and in a way, I do. But in another way I
feel that we cannot trust medication, and think there might be a better way
to achieve bone density. Since I am almost 65, I don't have 10 years to try
something else and have it fail. So, I will continue with this and hope it
does not fail.

I also am mad at myself that I don't take the time to exercise and lift
weight like I should.

Oh, well. I am not concerned about the "D" part of the pill. I start mine
this week since I just finished my last package last week.

I got a big chuckle out of this. Me too. I won't break the rule of
nothing in my stomach, but I have my coffee on the dot of 31minutes. <g>
I brush my teeth first but that's it.

I don't desperately need my morning coffee either before or after Boniva (or
Fosamax which I've aso taken), however what I do need is Tramadol and
Neurontin to control pain from Peripheral Neuropathy, which I take
immediately 1 hour after Boniva along with a couple of yogurts to soothe the
effects (of either B or F). I would benefit from being able to take these
anti-pain meds as soon as I arise.

About the new fosamax Vit. D pills.

This may be a bit cynical on my part but I think one of the reasons
for the new Fosamx Vit D pill is that Fosamax is about to be able to
be made as a generici in the US [It is already allowed in the EU].
Any new configuration of the prescription would, of course, be under
copyright protection for another period.

Teva, the big generic maker from Israel won in court the ability to
make the generic. I do not know if Dr. Reddy, the Indian generic
maker was included in the lawsuit but the generic is supposed to be on
the US market either this Spring or next.

Since M has spent so much money touting Fosamax, this will be a bid
loss of revenue for them .....unless, of course, they can convince
physicians to write scripts for the new combination drug.
