Very prone to aching joints and muscles

Very prone to aching joints and muscles

It used to be, I could exert myself heavily, and I might feel a little
sore the next day, but it wouldn't be too bad, and it would go away
quickly. One day I'd hike 9 miles up 1000 feet in the Rockies, then
the next day I'd do something similar, and so on for a week, and not
really feel much ill effects. I do recall being incapacitated for a
few days after climbing a huge volcano in Guatemala and getting lost
on the way down and wandering through underbrush for hours after
fleeing from bandits, but that I think is a normal reaction.

The transition seems to have come later that year, only 3 months after
my Rockies trip. I went on another 9-day hiking trip, and although
the hiking was if anything easier, by the second day I was aching
badly, and the third my muscles were so stiff and painful that I had
to spend the whole day at the campsite. I managed to do a mild, slow
hike the next day, but then I was out again...and so on for the rest
of the trip. My endurance levels on hiking seem to have been much
lower on subsequent trips as well.

A bit after that I got a job stocking at Target. It was a fairly
tiring job for anyone, but my coworkers- including an obese video-game-
nut couch potato and an extremely scrawny computer geek- handled it
OK, whereas I shortly found myself in pain all over my body, and in
spite of twice-daily hot baths and massive consumption of Ben-Gay and
ibuprofen, I had to quit.

My current job (feeding a stamping machine at a moulding factory)
involves some physical exertion, and is a bit repetitive, and involves
standing for hours, but nothing that should be that bad. I had very
similar jobs in the past with no ill effects. My coworkers include
overweight teenage girls and stooped-shouldered 75-year old men with
bad legs. Yet my muscles feel exhausted every day, so that when I
come home, for the rest of the evening it feels arduous just to walk
around the house. The aches and pains build up until at the end of the
week I can barely function.

During all this time, I've gone on brisk 2-mile walks every day except
since I got this last job, which is what I've done for years, so level
of exercise is not probably a factor here.

Anyway, any idea what could be causing this?
