Electronic Medical Records 101?

Electronic Medical Records 101?

Let me start out by saying that I'm an I.T. guy for a very small, very
rural hospital. I'm an expert at making computers work (very well
thank you) but I don't know anything about medical records.

Anyway, I've had a project handed to me where I have to get all of our
medical records into an electronic format ASAP. Can anyone suggest a
good resource that will tell me how to get started with an EMR? More
than anything I think I need to know what kind of data a hospital
typically keeps in a patient's EMR.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Jason,

That's pretty broad and could mean a variety of things. Do you want to
scan in the records and digitize them that way? Do you want the data
entered into discrete fields in a database? Do you want to buy exisiting
software or develop your own? Sounds like you need more details into
what you are expected to do.

An excellent resource to get you started is:

* w w w .emrupdate . com /

Although it is geared more towards outpatient EMR you will get some good
information and can ask questions to get you pointed in the right
direction. Good luck with your project.
