Careers in Health Informatics

Careers in Health Informatics

I am researching information on career potential for Health
Informatics in Minnesota. I am an individual that has IT experience
and I've taken health related courses in my BA. I'm currently looking
at the Masters of Health Informatics at the U of M but I'd like to see
what the potential employment possibilities are prior to making this
investment. If anyone has additional information I would greatly
appreciate it.

Tracy, there are a wide range of employment opportunities in health
informatics ... from working for healthcare providers (e.g.,
hospitals, clinics) to academics to healthcare software vendors to
pharmaceuticals, etc. I would recommend looking at the American
Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) website, which describes the
field and provides resources for it: www .amia.org. The AMIA Job List
would be a good reference for you to see what types of jobs are
available right now: http :// www .amia.org/inside/jobex/joblist.asp.

Remember that these are just two job list and there are many other
opportunities out there that are not listed here. Many Health
Informaticians have found success via Monster,com and I've found
success in the past by looking directly at specific companies I was
interested in as well as by "word of mouth".

I think this is an exciting career with many opportunities now and
more to come in the future.
