Medical informatics career

I am an IT professional with a BS in Information Systems and
Operations Management. I have been working as a systems analysts in a
small nonprofit organization for the last 4 years and am interested in
transitioning to a medical informatics career. What would be a good
way to do this?

I have noticed that the master's programs in my area requires some
medical training. Should I get an Associates in Nursing? What about
certification in HIT? There seem to be many options. Any advice?

Are you interested in Nursing or IT? Experience as a nurse will
doubtless be useful in a health care IT position, but Nursing Infomatics
is usually a Master's degree program.

Re: Medical informatics career

I have a less formal IT education, but would like to make a similar
transition. I took a year's worth of medical terminology and body
systems at a local community college, and am now a candidate for a
Master's Certificate in BioMedical Informatics as Oregon Health and
Sciences University in the States. The OHSU program is distance
education, is well done, and works for my current situation.

The big key seems to be to get that healthcare experience. If you can
swing the healthcare training...and experience... that would do you
well.

My .02-

John
