American Airlines

American Airlines

My wifes niece & boyfriend visited us last week.
Flying home to the Philippines AA made them jump
through hoops.

Do to weight restrictions on two bags they had to
remove 1 1/2 lbs from one bag and transfer it to another.

Before it was over (on other bags) they had to pay an
additional $200 for being over the over the limit.

Before you head to the airport for any trip
check the regulations & fees as they seem
to be changing everyday.

All of us did Vegas for six days like vacationers
except no hotel bill. Maybe I'll write a trip
report, as I did many new things.

On another note McCarren expects 550,000
people to pass through this weekend.

It is getting to the point where anything less than 8 hour drive is
easier to just get in the car. Probably cheaper too, even at these
rates. And I can take all the baggage I can fit into the trunk for free!!

What is the weight limit?

Can't speak of the other airlines, but on Midwest which we fly to LV, it is
50# and they are now charging $25 more if you want to check a second bag.

Jessica,

On their international flight, 2 bag limit 50 pounds per bag.
They actually had to open the bags on the floor and re-pack
because one bag was 51 1/2 pounds, moving 1 1/2 lbs
to the other bag.

My nieces boyfriend bought speakers for his car and
the additional charge for 70 pounds was $130 for
excess size + $50 for the weight for a total of
$180. I reported it as $200 on my original post,
so this is a correction.

I think the feds must step in and have one uniform luggage policy just
like the One Quart bag rules for liquids and gels.

Wait a minute?! You want to do away with competition? The feds need to
step back, not step up.

Northwest announced they too are going to charge for first checked bag, but
they are 'only' charging 15.00. So lets see who's next and if it will be
10.00?

Southwest has unions.

American is incompetent.

Watch how long Southwest's aircraft sit on the ground between flights.
Then watch any of Sothwest's competitors. Southwest turns the aircrft
around in 20 minutes. Very few of their competitors are under an hour.

Actually, EE, Southwest is one of the most unonized airlines around,
so that's not really it.

The difference is that Southwest is run very, very well, unlike most
of the US airline industry. Not only do they turn planes around fast,
like BD pointed out, but they standardized their fleet, are smart
about how they use their cash to hedge fuel prices, and so on.

Meanwhile, American and the legacy airlines hand out large checks to
executives for running their companies into the ground, have
inefficiencies in fleet and old-school hub and spoke systems that get
hosed when bad weather screws things up, and so on.

I have crappy experiences flying Southwest to Vegas (the planes are
almost always late when I fly out on a Friday, and I've had drunk
people removed from the plane on multiple flights), and I can usually
find a fare on MY hometown airline (Alaska) that will match Southwest
(since they compete pretty fiercely on the West Coast), but they're a
great airline to fly coach in- arguably, now that other airlines are
nickel and diming in coach, they are one of the best airlines to fly
if you don't have frequent flyer status anywhere. (I'd put them with
Jet Blue and Virgin on that score). Southwest is like Greyhound at
times, but if all you need is cheap, clean and on time with a soft
drink and peanuts from point A to point B...

Hmmm. Must be a mid-management thing. They always 'manage' to screw
a company up. In the case of SWA - my favorite airline - I guess this
ain't so.

Yeah, and most of their employees seem to be happy. I could not care
less if I ever fly another airline again.

See what I mean by mid-management?

Wow! I have never had such problems (thankfully).

That's all I need. I rack up FF points on my credit card, get free
drink tickets and they are usually a comfy plane to fly. So that's
why I usually use them.
