In this, you pick one six-digit number, and so does the machine.
For example, suppose you pick 123456.
If the machine comes up 490134, you matched none of the digits (only
matching them "in place" counts), so you win zero.
If the machine comes up 921886, you matched the 2 and the 6, so you
get 4.
If the machine comes up 128014, you match the 1 and the 2, but as they
are on the left, you matched the two leftmost digits, which pays 16
instead of just 4.
If the machine comes up 128492, you match the 1, the 2, and the 4;
matching 3 pays 12, and matching 2 from the left pays 16, so you get
the larger of the two, which is 16.
