Generally, if you get invited with comps, the tournaments are free.
The one I played in a month ago is probably typical. The tournament
consisted of 2 sessions one day (9AM and 2PM) and a 9AM session the
following day. Machines were assigned by picking numbered ping pong
balls out of a bag. Each session and each machine was set at 7
minutes. The idea is to see how much you can get on the win or
credits meter. At the end of the 7 minutes the machine shuts down and
your score gets recorded. The scores for all the sessions are added
together and placed on a list with the scores of the other players.
There is zero skill involved, unless you count being able to tell
time, being able to find where the tournament is being held and being
able to push the button to get the wheels spinning when they stop. I
noticed that the same machines with different players seemed to get
the most points so you can draw your own conclusions.
There was an awards ceremony the evening of the last session where
they announced the winners and had a drawing for additional prizes.
You had to be there to win a drawing but not to see how you did in the
tournament. I didn't attend because I decided to go to Andrew's
dinner party instead. We had 24 hours to check at the casino
cashier's cage to see if we placed in the money so I checked a few
hours later.
I found out early on that not playing in the tournament didn't negate
the comp room - YMMV. I played anyway because I'd never played in
one. I'm glad I did. I met some very nice people in their 80s who
called me, "Kid," because at 62 I was the youngest player in the
tournament.
The tournament was free and the comps (mine was a room comp for 5
nights (that covered the Soiree and pre/post activities) are obviously
there to get you into the hotel and casino. The awards ceremony gets
you back into the casino. Even having to go to the cashier's cage to
find out how a player did gets you back into the casino.
I got invited to the slot tournament and got the comp room based on
the fact that I stayed at this hotel 2 years ago even though I didn't
play at all in their casino.
Three or four times a year I get offers for comp rooms, etc., and
slot tournaments from just about every casino downtown, even though
I've only gambled in a couple. While gambling in the place would help,
I think the key to getting invited with comps, at least downtown, has
more to do with staying there (gambling or not) and (very important)
getting a slot club card, even if you never use it.
