Look at the number 25 winner. They only got a 'measly' $6.50 for their
beans. Folks, this is a win-win for great coffee.
When the incentive for producing great beans is there, and the 'farmer' and
crew benefit, and not the 'coyotes' that have traditionally taken advantage
of the farmers, then we win, with much better brew in our cup, and the
knowledge that the producers can make it through the year without starving
or going out of business.

There's a couple of very unusual aspects to the bidding of this
auction.

The #1 lot that went for $80.20/lb was a joint bid by two American
buyers, Stumptown and Sweet Maria's and what looks like a Japanese
group, Maruyama Coffee for Mikatajuku group. I haven't seen that
happen before. If that is a trend, we might see at least some small
amounts of more lots of COE beans rather than just a couple of lots
with the rest going to Japan or Europe. It kind of surprises me to
Sweet Maria's paying that much. I would think that $90-$100 per pound
beans will be a tough sell even for him.

The #2 and #3 lots (at $17.05/lb and $21.05/lb) went to Target.
Target? I didn't even know they sold any coffee besides Folgers,
Maxwell House and brands like that. And they are going to sell coffee
to the public at $25/lb? That should be interesting to watch. If
there's much to watch. They bought about 4,000 pounds of coffee, so
that comes to about 4 or 5 pounds per store. After doing some
searching on Wikipedia, I see that there's also a chain of 268 Target
department stores in Australia, so perhaps they bought the beans. In
which case, it's about 15 pounds per store. Maybe it was just time to
stock the Board of Directors coffee stash. It's a very odd development
as I can't see that there's really a big market for high end coffee at
this time. $10-$15 per pound coffee perhaps, but $25/lb? I can't see
it. It'll be sad to see it marked down to $8/lb during the next
Christmas shopping season.
