The temp here was 104F and the humidity was about 4%. Great fun and
a pleasant way to spend Father's Day. If anybody thinks the twenty-
something generation hasn't got what it takes I have news. We got
called out at about 4pm Saturday and got home the first time about 3am
Sunday. Then back out around 9am Sunday and back 5pm Sun. Our task was
protecting structures and the twenty-somethings were hotshot crews
doing the hot work. These young people were just magnificent. Full
wildlands gear and humping up and down huge grades in cactus covered
terain clearing firebreaks in full sun. No structures were lost and no
injuries. My helmet is off to these young folks. And let me tell you
that the young women on the crews matched the men step for step,
shovel full for shovel full and then some. Watching from shade while
they worked 14 hours in full sun was humbling, indeed.
