Best small drip unit (again)

Best small drip unit (again)

This morning I downloaded all available notes from this group
(167,000) and did a search for "best". I found 6 threads but none were
able to help. Many of the small units are no longer being made, one
being the Bodum Santos mini e.

I drink 2-3 cups of Smith Farms Kona in the morning and I am looking
for a drip unit that will take advantage of my fresh ground beans. I
want a new unit which mostly eliminates E-bay as a source. I prefer to
stay below $100 but this is not critical.

Howdy Norm!
Technically they're drip devices, so I'll throw you a suggestion for what I
consider the best non-espresso coffee makers:

Re: Best small drip unit (again)

Technically, vac pots are NOT drip devices - they are a form of low pressure
brewing (brewed coffee forced thru filter by 1 ATM pressure differential).
But they do make "brewed" style coffee. I love vacpots and always set them
up for company. But for 1st thing every morning they are a bit of a pain to
set up and clean.

Every few years there is a "stealth" inexpensive autodrip brewer that costs
about the same as the other lousy ones but by some miracle brews at the
proper temp. Usually these get discontinued pretty fast. I don't know what
the model of the minute is.

Re: Best small drip unit (again)

The best I've ever used or tested is a nondescript 4 cup brewer by
Braun. BB and Beyond for $50. No name or model # on it that I could
see tonight. Has a glass carafe, swing-out basket with gold filter. I
used it for travel and spec it out for salespeople doing field
tasting. Brews hotter than any other I've used....al

Re: Best small drip unit (again)

I used a Melitta Clarity in the RV until I bought a new Bunn airpot
recently. I liked the Clarity enough that when I broke the carafe a couple
of years ago I was in a panic until I could find a replacement. Two
complaints about it caused it to be replaced by the Bunn; 1) no not plate
thermostat, 2) no thermal carafe. But it made great coffee at an ideal
temperature and they were dirt cheap!

Re: Best small drip unit (again)

These small pots seem to vary randomly in terms of water temperature
control. I had an excellent one years ago that made good drip. An
identical model I bought for work made horrible coffee. The water was
too cold.

I think the way to go is what I do: a manual drip cone and a thermos
it can sit on. I also have a pyrex measuring cup I use to heat the
water with in a microwave. Total cost around $10. Traveling I use an
immersion heater if there is no microwave.

It's hardly any more work than using one of the auto drip pots.

I keep coming back to this setup also - I find the autodrip machines are
usually not long lived. The Melitta cone is bulletproof.

Second that motion. :-) I have used my Melita cone for many years without
any problems. I just measure the water into a kettle, bring to a boil and
then swing it back and forth for 15 seconds to cool it down (good exercise)
pour enough to wet the grounds, then 10 more counts of swinging and pour
away. I do have a Bunn warmer underneath during and after the pouring, and
it maintains the correct temperature for drinking.

As one alternate I found at a local Goodwill ($1.38) a new individual
French press It looks like a large glass with a lid and a seal with a
plunger going through it. Not bad for a one of french press.

unless you actually shoot bullets at it. ;)

yeah, the Melitta cones, either the plain cone or the cone carafe
combos (available in 6 and 10 cup versions; CM6/4 and CM10/6
respectively) are my preferred brew method when I'm not hauling out a
vac pot.

my hope is that soon 100% of our drip coffee at the shop will be made
with melittas.

As with Cyclepete, I borrow a drip urn, boil a cup of water in it, let
it cool a little and toss in a heaping teaspoon of fresh grinds. Let
the coffee brew, not very long and under a minute, After trying
various grinds, I like it best ground largest -- off the scale with a
Capresso Infinity. Then borrow the plastic filter holder and strain
over the cup. Paper filters, although I've a wire mesh, it's easier
to toss. What I'd also call a "clean" cup -- but miles from home
espresso territory. Should be close to a better stopgap until
something along a vacuum pot works out.
