So long, Margie

So long, Margie

Pete came in today dressed as usual. I haven't seen him in a long
while and I knew his lifelong partner, Margie, had died about 7 months
ago. Pete was dressed as usual, with his immaculate straw fedora,
white shirt and tie from the
'50s, tie pin, black slacks and polished Wingtips. The sadness in his
eyes was so, so different than when he and Margie used to come in on a
weekly basis. If you search Margie and Pete you can read some of the
story. She fell and suffered a fatal head injury while at home with
Pete. I'll miss her old world charm of coming in with her own China
coffee cup in a little velvet bag. She would take her little
handkerchief and dust off the seat for Pete even if she had seen us
buss the table and chair. Pete is missing her terribly as one could
imagine. No matter the time of year they were always dressed to the
nines. He told me this morning that she always "set him up" when they
were getting ready to go out. She would take time to pick out the
right hat, coat, shirt, tie, pants, shoes and socks. He would always
have a dapper handkerchief in his breast pocket when she was with him.
Margie had been to some modeling school (Pete could tell you the exact
agency) and so was always on the runway. I loved to be standing in the
roasting room when they came in to a full house. The younger folks
would invariably follow them with amazement as they ordered and walked
elegantly to their table where Margie would stand like a queen while
Pete pulled her chair out and sat her like he had been doing for
decades and decades. She always had a smile on her face and loved to
tell stories of when they met and when they worked in the bigtime
music world. Margie wore lace collars and lace cuffs and made it look
like a million bucks and like it was haute couture. It was when she
wore lace. Pete just adored her and you could tell even after 50
together he felt like he was taking the prom queen to the ball
everytime they were out together. Man, I sure will miss that lady.
peace on ya', Margie

Oh Bernie, you are certainly a wonderful writer. Your stories short
are just lovely. How nice for Margie and Pete to be remembered that
way.
