eBay seller: Precision Tamper Maker

Does anyone have any experience with tamper maker: Precision Tamper Maker?
His tampers are cheap and from his item descriptions it appears that he
knows what he's doing. I'm curious about fit & feel of the tampers,
especially the one-pound all S/S models.

I haven't dealt with the guy but he has extremely positive feedback. I've
always wondered about the cost of espresso tampers - attributed the high
cost to the small production volumes. I've also wondered about the benefits
of "fancy tampers" - once you get the diameter right what does the weight
add - if you do a 20 lb. tamp then even with a 1lb. tamper you are doing 95%
of the work. As you probably know, the Italians (who invented espresso)
eschew fancy tampers and hardly tamp at all or use the cheapo plastic or
wooden tampers that come with the machines or are fixed to the front of
their grinders. The "fancy tamper" seems to be an American invention.

The price isn't bad, so what's the catch? Do you think he owns a Shipping
Company and tampers are a side-line.

It's not rocket science. That's the catch. You need material and a
machine to cut it. You cut it and sell it.

Howdy Bertie!
I'll let you know how they work - I just ordered a flat & concave long
aluminum handled model. If they fit a Gaggia or E61 group filter basket I'll
be satisfied. Their prices are certainly right and their shipping is great -
I hate folks that use shipping to hide extra profits.

Yeah, no shit & I hate it too!!!!

A pocketwatch purchase I just made on eBay, $10USD for shipping to USA.
Beforehand I asked if he'd consider shipping to Canada, he replied no
problem. Just add 5 bucks. I sent him the "real" USPS rates for 2 USPS
Canada shipping options showing the HUGE RIPOFF eBAY 'whatever what ya
wanna tweak it to ratre' LOL!!

GREAT guy & as he said if there's a diff, he'd Paypal me it, & he sent me
back $10.00 USD.

Cool!
Craig. {;-D

Yep, the one pounder s/s is $24.95 + $19.90 shipping. Shipping to uk would
add some $ airmail. To be honest, his max is 58mm, which is a bit sloppy in
my Zaff. He does 'to order' so I'll email him and ask about shipping.

Flat & convex is what I ordered of course - wonder if anyone makes a
concave tamper?

Interesting point. I don't know whether you saw any of the vids of the WBC,
but 2 of the competitors, simply allowed the grinds to form a cone-shape.
They didn't bother to flatten the surface, with a sweep of the finger. They
simply tamped the cone flat.
This must create a denser area in the middle of the coffee pack, which may
suit the LM machines.
Perhaps a concave tamper would achieve a similar effect. I think there was a
short black concave tamper, made of neophrene (or something), that came out
a couple of years ago. It didn't exactly take off.
ps - got an email re the long handled s/s base, +$3 for 59mm.

Edit : correction, no extra charge for 59mm, it's still $16.95. Now waiting
for shipping costs to the uk.
