Montecristo Toro (DR)

Wanted a mild afternoon smoke and so I dug this one out of the
Coolerdor.

I've had this for 7 months, and it came out of a 5 Montecristo gift
set with a pen that Altadis was giving out at its dinner at the RTDA.
The pen in that set is pretty neat, it has a punch hidden in the cap.

Having not had one of these in what seems like ages, I wasn't too sure
what to expect. Honestly, given my previous mediocre experiences with
the [Dominican] Montecristos, I didn't have terribly high hopes.

Like many of Altadis' products, this is a Dominican cigar, of course,
and the binder and fillers are so sourced. The wrapper is a
Connecticut Shade, I believe grown in Ecuador. It's an EMS color, not
a really light color.

First half of the cigar had a nice, woody, Connecticut taste.
Pleasant, if not too complex.

Then closer to the band the cigar started to sour. I purged out a
pretty good amount of ammonia, which was a bit surprising given the
the rest this stick had. I guess it was pretty young to start out
with.

It was, though, very well constructed. The draw was perfect, the burn
was razor sharp, and the first ash held on for about an inch and a
half.

Towards the band, little more of a rich wood/light leather with the
same creaminess from a standard Dominican Connecticut, but when it
soured again at the band, I let it go.

A good cigar, but definitely not worth the price that Altadis charges.
I suppose this would be good for a new cigar smoker to try, and I know
a few folks that do like these a lot.

If you must have a Montecristo from the DR, I would suggest the White,
which is a much richer cigar. Every now and then, I can enjoy a
Montecristo White.

This isn't worth it, IMHO, but I more or less enjoyed it.
